Poetry Rhyme Schemes

Rhyme
when parts of words/phrases match to sound/look alike

Eye rhyme
Words that rhyme when spelled, but not pronounced

Exact rhyme
Repetition of accented vowel sounds and all sounds following them in words that are close together in a poem
OR
ends of words have identical sounds

Near rhyme
Words come close to rhyming, but don’t really rhyme

End rhyme
A word at the end of one line rhymes with a word at the end of another line
OR
end syllables of two words rhyme

Feminine rhyme
A rhyme of 2 syllables in which the final syllable is untressed(‘mother, ‘brother).

Masculine rhyme
A rhyme of final stressed syllables

Rhyme scheme
rhyming words represented with letters

Terza Rima
Italian poem, 3 tercets and final quatrain

Ballad stanza rhyme
A four-line stanza consisting of alternating eight- and six-syllable lines. ABCB rhyme pattern

English sonnet rhyme scheme
ABAB CDCD EFEF GG

Petrarchan sonnet rhyme scheme
ABBAABBA CDE CDE

Couplet
2 rhyming lines in a stanza

Tercet
group of 3 lines in a stanza

Quatrain
4-line stanza

Sestet
6-line stanza

Heroic couplet
two enstopped rhyming lines

Internal rhyme
1 line: middle word rhymes w/ end word
