couplet
A unit of verse consisting of two successive lines, usually rhyming and having the same meter and often forming a complete thought or syntactic unit.

quatrain
A stanza or poem of four lines.

the use of words that imitate sounds

the descriptive language poets use to create word pictures

sensory language
is writing or speech that appeals to one or more of the senses.

sound devices
Poets use to emphasize sound relationships among words. They use alliteration, consonance, assonance, onomatopoeia to engage to reader’s senses and create a musical and emotional effects.

alliteration
the repetition of the initial consonant sounds of words

assonance
the repetition of vowel sounds in nearby words

consonance
the repetition of consonants within nearby words in which the vowel sounds differ

narrative poem
a poem that tells a story

epic poetry
long narrative poems about gods and heroes

ballad
a song-like poem that tells a story, often one dealing with adventure and romance. Most are written in four-to six-line stanzas and have regular rhyme and rhythm schemes. A ________ often has a refrain (a regularly repeated line or group of lines).

lyric
brief poem in which the author expressed the feelings of a single speaker

sonnet
fourteen-line lyric poem with formal patterns of rhyme

euphemism
an inoffensive expression that is substituted for one that is considered offensive such as passed over-died

enjambment
the continuation of a syntactic unit from one line of verse into the next line without a pause

oxymoron
conjoining contradictory terms (as in ‘deafening silence’)

prose
ordinary writing as distinguished from verse

ode
a poem meant to be sung; A lyric poem of some length, usually of a serious or meditative nature and having an elevated style and formal stanzaic structure.
