Meter
the recurrence of regular units of stressed and unstressed syllables

Foot
the smallest unit of measurement in a metrical line of poetry

Sonnet
a 14 line poem

Blank verse
unrhymed Iambic parameter

Assonance
repetition of vowel sounds in nearby words that do not have similar endings

Consonance
repetition of similar consonant sounds at the ends of words with different vowel sounds before them

Alliteration
repetition of similar consonant sounds in a line of poetry; usually at the beginning of words or stressed syllables

Couplet
a two line stanza

Quatrain
a four line stanza

Stanza
a grouping of lines within a poem which is separated from others; usually for thematic or structural reasons of some kind; usually the stanza has a defined rhyme and or meter of its own
